FAQ – Pointe Percée Canyon
➡️ What is the difference between the Pointe Percée Canyon and the Salvadon Canyon?
Both are expert canyons lasting around 5 hours with abseils up to 50 metres — but the experience is radically different. The Salvadon plunges into a wild, enclosed gorge above Samoëns, with an immersive and aquatic atmosphere. The Pointe Percée unfolds in high mountain terrain above Sallanches, in an airy and panoramic setting. Throughout the descent, the view of Mont-Blanc accompanies every rappel — it's as much a visual experience as a technical one.
➡️ What does "comfortable with exposure" mean as a prerequisite?
The Pointe Percée involves aerial sections suspended over the void, exposed anchor points on open rock faces, and abseils where the rock pulls away beneath your feet. If you are competent on a rope but heights freeze you, this canyon is not for you. Comfort with exposure is a genuine requirement, not just a precautionary warning.
➡️ What does "off-season" mean for the Pointe Percée?
The Pointe Percée is best done outside the peak summer heat, typically in spring and autumn. In midsummer, the water flow is often too low to make the descent worthwhile. It requires a good water level — quite different from the Salvadon which is done after rainfall. Contact the guide for the ideal window depending on the year.
➡️ What is the logistics for the Pointe Percée day?
Meeting point at 8:15 am at the Sallanches cinema car park, from where the group carpools to the canyon start. The approach is long — 1 hour 30 minutes of walking — and the return takes 45 minutes. Plan for a full day and make sure your legs are in good shape before you even touch the water.
➡️ Which cities are closest to the Pointe Percée Canyon?
The canyon is located in the commune of Sallanches, in the Aravis massif. It is one of the most accessible expert canyons from Geneva (around 45 minutes), Chamonix (30 minutes) and Annecy (45 minutes). An ideal option for experienced canyoners staying in the Mont-Blanc area.
